Lose you gas cap key? Buy a car with a locking gas cap and didn’t get the gas cap key? Here is the webpage and video that is going to save your day! Click here for the YouTube Video
I’ll list the instructions out here as well:
- Take any small sharp pointy object such as a small Phillips screwdriver, scribe or even a larger nail around a 16 penny size.
- Pushing hard and turning at the same time, push/cut a hole through the first layer of the surface of the gas cap.
- Once you get through the first layer, push the tool you used in as far as it will go pointing toward the outer edge.
- Keeping the pressure on the tool, turn the cap. It should screw right off no problem.
There are many variations of locking caps on the market. This is the most common with the center located key slot and plastic exterior housing. Luckily for those of us who have been in the situation of a locked gas cap without a key that this is also the easiest to get off.
The harder ones to remove having the metal exterior that isn’t very easy to drill a hole through so you can lock the outer and inner sections together to remove the cap.
Another style that has locking tabs that expand outward to engage into the filler neck. You can rotate or pull them straight out. The tabs have to internally retract into the cap body to permit removal of the gas cap.
As I get the opportunity I will research and demonstrate how to remove the other styles. As I figure them out I will post them here on this site and on my YouTube channel Power Addicts.
Hope this helps you!
Have a great day!
